Background of the Study

Business Intelligence (BI) refers to technologies, practices, and systems that gather, analyze, and present business data to assist in decision-making. In the banking sector, BI tools play a crucial role by providing real-time data, predictive analytics, and insights that inform strategic decisions related to operations, customer service, and financial performance (Afolabi & Ojo, 2023). BI systems enable banks to process large volumes of data, identify trends, optimize resource allocation, and improve customer satisfaction, thereby enhancing their competitiveness in the market (Elumelu et al., 2024).

In Kaduna State, where the banking sector is expanding rapidly, the implementation of BI systems by banks is increasingly seen as a key factor for growth and operational efficiency. However, despite the widespread adoption of BI tools, there is limited empirical research on how BI affects the strategic decision-making process within the banking industry in this region. This study aims to explore the role of BI in supporting strategic decisions and its impact on the overall performance of banks in Kaduna State.

Statement of the Problem

Although BI tools are widely adopted by banks in Kaduna State, their full potential in improving strategic decision-making remains underexplored. Many banks struggle with challenges such as data quality issues, lack of skilled personnel, and integration difficulties with existing systems. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of BI systems in enhancing decision-making and performance, addressing key issues such as the accuracy of data, the speed of decision-making, and the influence of BI on long-term strategy formulation (Musa et al., 2024).

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the role of Business Intelligence (BI) in strategic decision-making within banks in Kaduna State.

2. To assess the impact of BI on the performance and competitiveness of banks in Kaduna State.

3. To identify the challenges faced by banks in Kaduna State in implementing BI tools for strategic decision-making.

Research Questions

1. How do Business Intelligence tools influence strategic decision-making in banks in Kaduna State?

2. What impact does Business Intelligence have on the performance of banks in Kaduna State?

3. What challenges do banks face when implementing Business Intelligence systems for decision-making?

Research Hypotheses

1. H₁: Business Intelligence tools have a significant positive impact on strategic decision-making in banks in Kaduna State.

2. H₂: The use of Business Intelligence improves the performance and competitiveness of banks in Kaduna State.

3. H₃: Banks in Kaduna State face significant challenges in implementing Business Intelligence systems effectively.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on banks in Kaduna State that have adopted Business Intelligence tools in their decision-making processes. Data will be collected through surveys and interviews with managers, decision-makers, and IT personnel in these banks. The study will be limited to exploring the role of BI in strategic decisions and may not address all operational aspects of BI systems in the banking industry.

Definitions of Terms
